Sophia's World
I write. Most of my work has been in theatre/film, but I love writing stories for children and collaborating with other writers/artists in all sorts of creative endeavours, from visual arts, to cabaret.
My Origin Story
My interest in theatre derived from my training and work as a dancer and actress with various theatre and dance companies in Guatemala.
I started writing in London, when I joined the young actors group of the Actor’s Touring Company (ACT@ATC).
My first play PARROTS received the New Playwriting Prize in Guatemala in 2010 and went on to open the National Theatre Festival in 2011. It was then performed in its English version at the Arcola Theatre by the Actors Touring Company. Since then, I have collaborated with various theatre companies and produced my own plays.
I was also a founding member of the collective Tamasha Playwrights of Tamasha Theatre Company.
On the shoulders of giants
I owe my writing education to Robert McKee, who first introduced me to the elements of storytelling, and who over the years has remained a source of knowledge and inspiration.
Graham Whybrow and Simon Stephens at the Arvon Foundation were also integral in my understanding of playwriting.
And last, but not least, the undergraduate program in Creative Writing at Oxford University, which allowed me to explore other genres and styles.
